The second generation of Disney characters came as a shock to me.
I’m sure I’m not the only one to have a young child shatter any sense of youth I had left when they started talking about Disney princesses that I had never heard of before.
Don’t even ask how I felt when I was ever so politely informed that these mystery characters were the children of the characters that I knew as a child. I began asking my friends with children about them.
They asked me what rock I had just crawled out from under.
This happened the summer I finished college and I had just accepted a position as a second-grade school teacher. And here I was about to go into the lair of the beast without weapon or armor. Those kids were going to tear me apart I was sure. So I began to do my research. Guess how I decided to decorate my room?
That’s right, Disney’s Descendants was my theme, and it was an immediate success! I soon found myself in deep conversation with my wonderful students during the Friday tea party we had every week (on the condition they behaved themselves tolerably that week of course) about the plot-lines of these characters.
But I digress.
The point I was trying to make is that kids and adults can connect with one another on a real level through these shared characters. And finding a way to connect with children seems like it’s getting more and more difficult as they become engrossed in their handheld devices.
So try throwing a Descendants themed party for your children and their friends! They’ll be the talk of the classroom. And you’ll have shared a precious moment with your children. Don’t forget to use these invitations!
